My brother worked the graveyard shift for years when his boys were little. It was hard because he then had to stay up with the kids all day while his wife worked. I think he averaged 4 hours of sleep in the evening.
I'm not a third shift dad, but my wife was a third shift mom-to-be at one point. There's no way she could have kept that up after our son came along. She worked 10-11 hour shifts for 7 days straight, then had 7 days off. During her work weeks, all she did was work all night and sleep all day.
