Advising Your Children About Future Careers

When I was little, my father told me to get a career in medicine. It broke his heart when I've taken up a career course in computer. Although I'm not happy with his reaction, I'm glad that I have proved to him that I could have a good life with the career that I made.

With my children, I only advise them about their future jobs but I let them choose whatever career they would like to have.

I would say what ever makes them happy. I would be happy to make suggestions if they asked, but as long as they are happy.

I would go for their preference. It would be their career and life and not mine, so it makes sense to let them decide what they want to do. Of course advice will always be given upon request.

I've told my kids that they need to find a career that will make them happy and that they don't have to follow in my footsteps.

As parents, we can only provide guidance, but we cannot dictate to them or run their lives. They have their own lives to live apart from ours.
