How do you decide?

That one parent is better than the other when it comes to sole support and custody? Even more what if both parents are civil and want to split the custody, how exactly is that done?

I've heard of people doing equal custody and it usually just involves one week on, one week off kind of thing. That would be the best scenario for the kids, I think. Actually, the best scenario would be their parents wouldn't get divorced, but that's not always possible.

As for one being better than the other, I think sole custody is only necessary when one parent has some kind of major issue like a drug problem or is abusive or something like that.

In all honesty, I think each situation is unique to the married couple and the family involved. People divorce for lots of reasons.
