Letting go

Do other dads find it really hard to let their children be a little independent? It's really hard to allow them to head off to an out-of-state amusement park with another family, even if you know the family well. We are always inviting our children's friends to the beach with us, but it's harder when it's your own children heading off with someone else.

I found it harder when mine were younger, especially when I first became single. I wanted to protect them from any further heartache and I know I rather smothered them for a while. I'm better about it now, but I don't believe I'd let them go out of state unless I knew the other family very, very well.

Yes, I find it hard sometimes, but I know it's necessary. We can't hold onto them forever. Baby steps is what I do. I just let go little by little.

I think if my daughter was older, I wouldn't have a problem letting her go off with a friend's family on a short vacation. I want my daughter to learn how to stand on her own two feet.
