Son having accidents

My son is 8 and he has been having accidents in his pants with number 2. My son gets constipated from the asthma medication he's on, and the Doctor said that constant constipation can cause accidents because kids will eventually lose the urge to use the potty. I'm worried this will continue and cause an issue in school. Other than prune juice, what else can I try to help him? I want to keep laxatives as a last resort if I can.

I've heard pears are supposed to be a natural laxative. I'm not sure if they make this, but is there such a thing as a fiber supplement (like Metamucil) for kids? Also, there's that Activia yogurt, but, again, I'm not sure if that's okay for kids.

My son (only 5 months) has been having constipation issues so here is what works for us. Dark Karo syrup, prunes, pears, and apricots. For the Karo mix a couple of teaspoons in a glass of milk and drink it up.
