I think just the opposite of your friend, going to school when older is a great thing! I think it is a good way to keep things fresh, and to stay young, in a way.

Personally, I like to learn, about various things, even if I'm not interested in a career. If I had the free time, and money, I could see myself taking courses just out of interest, and just wanting to know more. I think as I get up there in the years, that would be a great thing to spend my time doing.

No one is too old to go to school. The circumstances why people had to forgo schooling when they were younger vary just as the reasons for going back to school when they are a lot older. Learning is a continuing process. Some retired people actually went back to school to learn a whole new profession.
