When its not a divorce

Not everyone gets married to start with and many states still have a common law marriage so I am wondering when its not a paper marriage how does it work? I would assume both parents still need to go to court to set child support but what about items that both people acquire during the relationship?

I have some friends that have been through this. Custody and child support and still set through the court just like if there had been a divorce. Personal possessions are a different matter and not easily settled. Then again, when my ex-wife and I split up she had a bonfire with all my personal belongings and I never saw restitution for that. Married or not, I think these things are always sticky and someone usually gets the short end of the stick.

I think that tends to be the biggest problem (the extra stuff). I know a girl who had split with her child's father only to be told "Buy all new" from the guy who did not even bother to give her spare clothes for the child when she sat for him.
