It seems more and more that mothers are ending up flipped sides and being the one ordered to pay for child support, but how does this work when you are the step parent of a child too?

Do you mean that your are a step dad and your step kids live with their father? I think it means that your wife pays the child support to their father and that means it affects you too.

Yeah Unclerob is right the mother would have to pay child support to the father regardless if she remarried or not. That means the responsibility would become yours as well.

When you marry into a situation like this, you should be prepared for all possible scenarios, and this is one of them. It's just something that the new guy on the scene has to deal with sometimes.
