Keeping a Budget

Has anyone tried to teach their teenage boy(s) to keep a budget? I've tried to teach them the budget process I use, and they seem to understand the value of it but they don't seem to be interested enough to actually practice it.

Does he make his own money? It's a lot easier for them to understand how fast money leaves their wallet, and how much work it takes to earn it, when it's them doing the earning.

Yes, DeputyDad, it's his own income, and he is not very thrifty or conscientious about his spending. That's why I thought it would be a good idea to encourage him to maintain a budget. As you know, when things really get serious, a budget is required.

Does he have any bills to pay, like a cell phone or car insurance? If he has obligations to pay, then hopefully he is paying those. Anything else is extra that he can spend on whatever he likes. That's still a budget, even if it's not the one you would have.

I am sure when you have nothing to worry about it is easy money, spend it as you want. How about you start taxing him? He is living rent free in your home, right?

I miss those days when most of my income could be spent on whatever I wanted. Kids and student loans have definitely put a dent in care-free spending!
