    Van doors freezing shut

I live in New England where we get a lot of snow, sleet and ice, but I've only had the doors freeze shut twice. Both times were severe storms with high winds that forced the sleet/snow into all the crevices of the doors.

Huge debate on Facebook over story of police killing a 19-year-old

A father called the cops on his son when his son took off with his truck, without permission, after getting mad at his dad for not buying him cigarettes. The guy ran from the cops, hitting other cars and endangering countless lives, and in the end, was killed by the police. People I know on...

    Into the Markers

At least it was on them and not the walls. I will never forget having to paint over my girls' artwork on one apartment bedroom. It wasn't funny when it happened, but three years later when we were moving, it was kind of nostalgic seeing their pictures.

    A bad holiday

We've never made the holiday about how much you get or how much you can spend on everyone else. My girls are happy with whatever they get and love to help make gifts for people, instead of spending a lot of money.

    Obamacare, Health Insurance, Etc.

I didn't think states had a choice in whether or not to participate. My understanding is that it is a federal law now. We've had mandatory insurance here for several years, so now we would not only take a hit in federal taxes, but we still have the penalty on state taxes.

    Single Son wants to adopt

I think it's admirable that he wants to adopt an abandoned child. Don't worry about advising him, unless he asks, of course. The adoption process is a long one, and he will be told all the stuff that comes along with raising a child, because they want people to be completely sure of what...

    Man, is it cold!

Sure, rub it in, Jason. I'm in the northeast, too, but it wasn't gloomy all week here on the coast where I am. It was raining off and on for a couple of days, but the temperatures were in the high 60s at the same time. Yesterday, we did have a cold front come in, though, and it went down...

    Single dads raising girls

Do you have women in your life to give your girls a female perspective on things? Thank God, I have my mother and my ex-mother-in-law, as well as assorted aunts to make sure the girls have a womanly influence. Although, I've been accused of being more feminine than masculine where I've had to...

    Short on breakfast

I'm not one to eat breakfast, either, but I know it's a bad habit. Did you know that your metabolism doesn't rev up until you actually eat something? During your sleep, the metabolism slows and you need to eat something to get it going faster again. I've been working on breaking this habit.

    On a Shrek Kick

I love Shrek, especially the first one, but really, they're all good. Thank goodness mine never did the My Little Pony thing because that would drive me mad. My girls were never completely girlie like that.

    Tattoos and piercings

That's how I feel about it, Timothy. The piercings bother me more because many can lead to infections, but the tattoos I try to forbid because I think they're too young for the decision. What looks good at 15 won't look nearly as good at 50, but they don't get that their minds will change 100...

    Tattoos and piercings

What are your rules on these two things? My girls complain that I'm mean and far too old-fashioned (but I can live with that). I allowed ears to be pierced, but that's it until they're 18. I don't allow tattoos, either. Of course, one child has gone out behind my back and had her belly...

Life insurance once the kids are grown

I only buy term insurance and it does go up as you get older, so it makes sense to reduce it to only what is needed. I've reduced it a couple of times through the years already, but I'm not completely sure what I should carry once they're grown and out.

Giving guidance (Correction) to grown sons

It might be better to offer advice if we knew what the boys are doing that you don't like. Are they taking advantage of her or speaking roughly to her? My advice would definitely depend on what they're doing wrong.

    Making apple butter

I love apple butter. I have seen recipes for the crockpot that can be frozen instead of canned - is that what you did or are you canning the apple butter? Perhaps you could share your recipe?
