I like your second wife's system. It's so much better to take time to share what the presents are and thank the person for the gift. Everyone opening them at the same time in chaos doesn't teach kids to be thankful or even have good manners toward the giver.

I hope your wife doesn't stay angry long. What you did was a good thing, but it was probably quite a blow to your wife to lose the pictures. The best thing to do (which many, including me, fail to do) is to save what we don't want to lose to disk.

I wouldn't punish my son for protecting his sister. I would explain that there are better ways to handle the situation than physically fighting, though. That's really not a good way of handling any situation (unless someone is trying to beat the crap out of you, of course). As for the...
