An asteroid passing by Earth

I just read news that a giant asteroid (the size of an aircraft carrier) has passed by Earth, and the closest approach to this tiny planet occurred at 6:28 p.m. ET on Tuesday. I hope everything goes will with us.

I heard that this asteroid passed between the orbit of the moon and the orbit of the earth. Scientists knew about it and were able to predict its path which allowed to really study this one.
