Annulment vs Divorce

How do you determine if a marriage can be annulled rather than terminated by divorce? I know that most will go for an annulment if possible, but what is the reason?

I thought an annulment was set only after the marriage had been around for at least a month but no longer than a year? I think that is what my buddy said when he got his, not married one night in Vegas but pretty close. He ended up marrying a friend of his and after a week they realized that it was a horrible idea.

I bet a lot of Vegas weddings end up getting annulled. I think that an annulment has time restrictions and it basically wipes the marriage off your record. It will count as never having been married at all. I think that it's also a religious thing. I believe I read that in the Catholic church an annulment has a different meaning.
