Comfort a Child?

How do you comfort your child when it experiences sadness? I'm talking about serious stuff, passing of it's grandparents, huge life changes and such.

That is a tough one for all parents and their skill level because you never know how your kids is going to react to such situations. I guess reasoning will help but physical comforting and ensuring the child that it is all normal should be generally enough.

We observed early on that kids acted out these things through playing with their dolls and toys. We listened to what they were saying and then worked in comforting words at other times, not letting them know we had eavesdropped on their talk with their dolls. So far, it's working.
