Knowing when to let it go

I have a teen-aged son who can drive me crazy at times. The daughter wasn't like that, but my oldest son is as stubborn as I am, plus some. I hate getting into a verbal ping-pong match with him, but there are some things I just can't give in to. How do others know when to let something go and let them just have their way and learn their lessons the hard way?

I think you have to look at the potential consequences of the situation. If it's something that could have an outcome of him getting hurt, you need to stand your ground. If it's something that will just teach him an unpleasant lesson, let it go.

It depends on what the situation is. What are you arguing about? If he is doing something illegal or that could get him hurt, I would step in. If it is something you prefer he doesn't do, but it won't hurt him if it goes wrong --- I would let him find out the hard way.
