My wife has outdone herself with our expected baby's room. Still, she spent a ton of money on it. Why does a baby's room need to be all decorated and everything, it isn't like the baby will care.
I often wondered that too. We did the same it each time it was great but I don't understand either. Wait until they are old enough to pick what they want in their room.
I can see painting the room a bright color and then putting cute, bright, colorful objects in the room. Babies are drawn to colors and it's good for them. We always made the rooms into a theme but we didn't spend a ton of money on them.
I think it is more for the show of the baby more than anything else. You do not want to go into a sulky and dark room that is depressing. I know some mothers do take it over the top though.
