Leaves turning early is a sign of poor health?

So the leaves on all our trees are already turned and dropped. This is far sooner than other maples in the area. Is this a sign of poor health? Our maples are huge and older so I'd hate to lose them. How long can the trees last in their declining years?

    What age for Apple skins?

At what age do you finally stop peeling apples for your kids and let them just eat the skin? I don't want my kids to choke but at the same time, I don't want them to get too used to eating skinless apples either.

So how do you feel about that?

Alistair, Perhaps what you learn in your courses and the way it works in practice are quite different. If a child is having a hard time with this, they change it up to something like "You just built the tower, I'll bet you're proud of yourself" And to answer your question as to what they can...

So how do you feel about that?

My son is attending a Montessori school and one of the things they do there is they don't praise and say "GREAT JOB" for everything. They say something like "You just built that tower, how did that make you feel" and then they let the kids praise themselves. They say they do this so that kids...

    Speaking in sentences

My kids came out of the womb talking a mile a minute. They must get it from their mom. My oldest's first words were actually in the form of complete sentences with near perfect grammar. It was just plain weird. Doctors these days are pretty good about identifying problems and recommending an...

    Did you have any idea...

We are minimalists and I think it made everything a lot easier. We used a laundry basket as a bassinet, the changing table was just a pad on top of a dresser and we didn't own a bouncer. The one piece of equipment that we couldn't have done without though was a swing. All kids love that swing.

    Don't touch!

Make sure it is teathered to the wall very soundly and don't use any glass bulbs within her reach. You'll still have to tell her several times a day not to touch it but at least she won't get hurt. You might also want to make sure that there are special Christmas decorations out that she can...

    Wisdom teeth

Mine began to grow in when I was 15 They poked through the skin half way and remained that way for the next 10 years. Then at 25 they started to hurt but of course I didn't want to go to the Dentist. By the time I finally went to the dentist I was 28 and my mouth hurt so bad I could barely open...

    Kids cooking

You're not going to get them to *want* to clean up, but that's part of cooking isn't it? If you teach them how to clean as they go, they might not be so overwhelmed at the end.

    Responsible enough for a pet

A pet is a lot of responsibility and it is a responsibility that a child cannot handle on his own so no matter what mom and dad will be sharing in the care of the pet. Personally I'd go for a cat.

    cut family ties

If you are in a position where you can be supportive of this family member then that's great, I'm sure she needs it but If she is just a drain on you and your family then it may be time to focus your attention elsewhere. I wouldn't say turn your back on her, you can always revisit the...

    Kids and knives

My wife and I share kitchen duties and we both include our kids in the cooking. One thing that we do that is somewhat unpopular with our friends is that we allow our very young children to cut with knives. Of course we are supervising and teaching them how to properly hold the food and knife. It...

Can you perform the Heimlich maneuver?

Yes, I have taken the course. I have never had to use it though. I was taught to give five hard blows between the shoulder blades first as this can often work on children and is less likely to cause damage such as a broken rib. If this does not work then move on to five abdominal thrusts. I...

    Artichokes

Honestly to me the best way to eat artichokes is steamed and then you eat the pulp from the bottom of the leaves dipping them in butter first until you get down to the heart. If your wife likes them like this then it is actually pretty easy just to steam one for her. They're pretty expensive...

    Caught in the act

Yep, we've been walked in on. We taught our kids to always knock on our door and we've never had an open bedroom, but one night our 5 year old son woke up with a nightmare and walked in. Fortunately we had the lights off but I'm sure he still saw plenty. He never asked questions and it was never...

    Where will baby sleep?

My wife and I both like having a separate nursery. It makes it much easier to ignore every little whimper and only tend to the baby when he really needs it. That sounds a bit cold, but if the baby is right next to you you worry about every tiny little noise and it's hard to get any sleep.

    Biological Father

This happens with adoption. Kids are curious about their birth parents. It does not mean that the child loves his parents any less. It's no different than a situation where both parents adopt a child together.

    Taking belongings between houses

One thing I learned recently is that it is best for the kids if they are allowed to bring their belongings freely between mom and dad's houses. The exception being something like an Xbox which belongs to the family and not just to the child. So it does not matter who gave what for Christmas, the...

    Going Out For Movies

We are lucky to have a drive in near us. The cost is $20.00 for the full carload for a double feature and occasionally a triple feature. The first movie is usually for younger kids and by the time the later movies are on the kids are sleeping in the back so we stay to watch the second movie too.

    In room for c-section?

My wife had a c-section for our last baby and I opted to stay out of the operating room. We are thinking about having another child and it would likely be c-section again. Of course I want to support my wife but I'd really rather not be present while they are operating. Has anyone been there for...
