Bribing kids to do well

I do not agree with doing this at all, but my wife is guilty of doing it. Just yesterday, we went and watched our youngest daughter in a dance competition. My wife told her if she did good, she would buy her a hamster, kitten or a fish!

I am a little less than happy with my wife right now. Turns out my daughter will be getting a fish for her great performance yesterday!

I think there is no problem with this if your wife do it not very often. Giving rewards for a good performance would improve self esteem of kids. I agree with you in some way though that kids need to perform their best with or without any rewards.

I agree with Leon. You and your wife should talk about this and if possible away from the child's ear. There should be a distinction between rewarding and spoiling the child but sometimes there is no difference.
