Last month, Riptide chronicled the world of Miami's professional sign wavers. It's a job Michael Bell Jr. is getting a taste of and may have to look forward to as an adult if he doesn't get his grades up.

Bell Jr.'s father, Michael Bell Sr., obviously, is making his son stand on a street corner during Spring Break with a sign letting the world know that the kid is currently failing three of his courses.

It's not the first time a Florida parent has devised such a punishment. Last year a Tampa mother made her high school-aged son wear a similar sign in public because of his 1.22 GPA.

Though, it appears to be the first time the punishment has sprung up locally. According to Local 10, Bell Jr. is now spending his spring break wearing the sign at North Kendall Drive and SW 107th Avenue. Bell Jr. is currently failing math, language arts and civics.

Wow, that's absolutely shameful. You don't publicly humiliate your kid just for getting bad grades. Why doesn't Daddy-o realize that part of his son's failings are due to poor parenting?

It's creative, I'll give him that. And I'll be surprised if that kid doesn't pick his grades up after this. I'm not into public humiliation either, but to each his own.

I guess some kids need a little more pushing to get good grades. I would have been so embarrassed, I would have made straight A's! I would not do this to my kids, but amazingly my boy likes school. I hope he still does when he gets older.

This is probably not a method of punishment I would use, but I can see the correlation of what they were trying to do. They were basically saying you can get better grades or the only job you are going to get is holding a sign on the side of the road for minimum wage.

Haha, I find this actually kind of funny. But he shouldn't humiliate his kid like that. But at least the kid will learn his lesson I suppose.

I read about this elsewhere. The dad said that he didn't want his son to end up a statistic. I think he did a good thing and it's a life lesson that the son will always remember. Good for him.
