Not proud of his marriage

I have a friend who loves his single kid but is not really proud of his marriage. I have no idea why. I personally know his wife and she is a nice woman and mother.

Who knows what problems they may have that you don't know of. Sometimes people become disappointed because they had too high expectations. In that case, it's probably all in their head. They need to realize that reality sometimes can't live up to their unrealistic goals. Many people I know are like this, including me.

Even the closest of friends do not know everything about everyone. People are good at keeping things to themselves, unless of course these are friends of yours who post all types of stuff about their life on social sites like facebook and twitter.
