    Strawberry picking

We take the kids every year and make homemade strawberry ice cream. It is a much awaited activity. We had a frost last night, and the strawberry farmers were up much of the night trying to lessen any damage to their crops.

    Hunger Games

I was debating seeing this. My wife wants to see it, as does the boy. We've put it off until the crowds die down. I thought Easter vacation would be a good time to catch a matinee. You've convinced me to go, Bobby. I'll surprise them in a day or two.

    Library Time

We go to the library once every two weeks. When I was young, I couldn't go to the library because my folks never had time to take me. Now that I'm older and can make my own choices, I make sure I take the kids to whatever specials are going on at the library. They do check out books, tapes...

    Picnic on the beach

We often go to the beach over spring break, but this year we have decided to stay home. We may end up heading out at the last minute, but right now, we have made no definite plans. We love picnics on the beach, but not if the sand is blowing.

    Kids and cell phones

With all the new technology out there able to keep kids safer, parents often choose for their kids to have cell phones so they can phone home and stay in touch with each other. Surely, there's a phone out there somewhere that just attaches to a kid's clothing and ONLY allows parents or assigned...

What is the most valuable gift you can give your children?

Unconditional love, of course, goes without saying. I think, too, that one of the most important gifts you can give a child is acceptance and affirmation of who and what he is. No matter whether he puts on a pound too much, or smokes that first cigarette, or wrecks your car or worse, his...

    Embarrassing Bodies Show?

I think all these television shows are way too graphic. I've stopped watching shows like CSI, Bones and any show that shows graphic parts of human bodies. I hate those shows that show operations, blood and babies being born. There is no reason other than shock value to air some of that stuff. We...

Do you let your kids see you and your spouse fight?

I'm torn on this one. I don't think it's good at all for a child to have to deal with the emotions that come from arguing, rudeness and harsh words their parents can fling at each other. I avoid it at all costs, which also means that we try to talk out our problems in quiet, respectful voices...

    Learning on their own

People who don't have children are always so sure they know what they would not do with their children and how to fix every problem other parents have. Let them have that day of rude awakening. Then they will ask. Rest assured.

    Young Child and Grandparents Death

I agree with the approach. My grandson and I talk about death sometimes, and I always treat it as a positive thing. We are both church-going Christians, and meeting in Heaven is a reality for us. We also talk about our deceased relatives as though they are still members of our family, which they...

    Like your own father?

My father milked cows. I don't. My father slopped hogs. I don't. My father plowed fields with a horse. I don't. My father helped his wife churn butter. I don't. My father was plain and simple. I am, too. I also have an iPad. He had a chair and a warm fire.

    Too much fast food

Make a couple of huge pots of soup every so often. Throw everything into it. Buy some of those plastic cups like barbecue comes in. They're cheap at the food warehouses. Fill them up, slap a label and a date on them. They thaw in a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator. It's a great hurry...

    Planting a garden

I finished turning up my garden over the past week. The weather has been great around here, although a bit breezy. I'm going to end up with beans, peas, corn, butter beans, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, watermelons and probably one or two more things. What do others plant here?

    Child Support is hurting me

Have you considered getting a better paying job? How about taking two jobs? A reconciliation with the wife might be an idea. I'm old school, and I believe parents need to take care of their children. We had it tough growing up, but my mom and dad found a way to do it. My upbringing would have me...

    Unexpected and in shock

Tom, you will be in for the ride and joy of your life. Just think, when you're my age, your new baby will probably have paved the way for more and then added some bonus grandchildren, too. There is nothing like having grandchildren. Life is good, man.

    A tendency to long life

My mom is a twin. She died when she was 66. Her twin is still alive and kicking at 82. The difference is that my mom was a heavy smoker. All their siblings who smoked have died before they were 70. The non-smoking siblings are 82, 90 and 93.

    Hobbies

I'm just finishing up building a recreation shelter that has ended up being a shop/kitchen combination. We will use half of it for entertaining when we cook out and the other half for a shop for me. I love building things with wood.

    Not enough homework

I just saw a thread here about too much homework. I was complaining yesterday because our grandson never has homework. He says he does it all in school. Frankly, I think something is wrong when students come home from school day after day with little or no homework. The schools could at least...

    Sushi at Home

We have always eaten fish and grew up having it two or three times a week. Ours came out of the river and out of the ocean. We also cooked it. We had fried fish, broiled fish, fish stew, baked fish and fish kebabs. We could put Bubba Gump to shame. The point is: we cooked our fish and want it...

    How much to spend

I know my wife and I are guilty of spending too much money on our grandchild. He has always had the latest toy, and now he even has an iPad, although I'm not buying the new one for him. He's only thirteen. How overboard do other grandparents go? It's good that we didn't have a ton of grandchildren.
