    Pregnancy scare

Just got the news that my wife's pregnancy scare was exactly that. Neither of us really want to expand the family and we've started talking about making this a permanent decision. Any guys been through the op? How did you decide who should be the one to have it?

    Classic DVDs

I'm busy scouring yard sales and Internet auction sites for Disney (and other) classic DVDs. I wish I had the skill to capture a child's imagination and attention the way these movies do!

    Snowed in?

Anyone here living through the freaky snow storms I keep hearing about? I'm not a fan of the cold and couldn't imagine living somewhere with lots of snow.

    Broken toe!

Can you believe I broke my toe? I wasn't even doing anything exciting, just stubbed it on something in the yard, and that was that. Still, it could be worse. At least I can still type!

    Kids' clubs hotels

Has anyone here ever made use of this kind of service? We've been looking at some all inclusive resorts in other countries and most have a kids program, but I'm not sure how safe they are.

    Volunteer work for the family?

I would like to get involved in some kind of community giving or volunteer work. If there's something we could do as a family that would be even better. Any ideas?

    Junk food guilt

So last weekend I took my daughter out for the day. Her mom deserved a day with girlfriends so all was good. I had planned on taking her to a nice restaurant but hunger hit and we ended up eating burgers. How often do you let your kids eat that kind of food? I still feel like I planned things...

    Anyone been to Solvang?

I am thinking about taking the family to this Danish village in California for a long weekend. I'm not sure how much there is for a youngster to do but it sounds like a nice area to visit. Any tips?

    My dancing days are over!

I am going to regret throwing myself around the room to a CD my daughter chose. Thirty minutes of energetic music and a lot of laughs later, I am done for and she is still raring to go.:o

    Drawing class

I used to be quite good at sketching, way back in the day. Last week I picked up a leaflet for some local classes. Now I have to choose between sticking with charcoal, which I know I can do, or going for something different. Either way, it feels good to be taking up an old hobby again.

    My bad day

I'm an older dad and have no problem with it most of the time. The other day at work someone announced his wife's pregnancy, and then started to worry he was 'too old' to be able to give the kid the best a father can. It's depressing as he is around 15 years younger than me!

    Dessert

How often do you serve dessert? As a child we seemed to have one after every evening meal. Most of them were fairly substantial too. I try to eat fruit most days, saving the tasty treats for weekends or special meals.

    Chess

I enjoy playing chess and have just started teaching my godson how to play. These days it is harder to find people to play against, which is a pity as I think the strategy involved is useful for focusing the mind. I am looking forward to my daughter being old enough to learn.

    Brain training

Does anyone here buy special educational resources to give their kids so called 'brain training'? I always believed that exposing them to as much language and experience as is possible is the best way to help kids learn.

    Switching to wine

I had my annual company check up last week and the doctor advised me to cut down on drinking spirits. Not that I drank a lot, maybe a whisky or brandy a couple of times a week. So now I am trying to stick to red wine, just a glass or two a day. I hope I can last on this regime!

    Easter festivities

It seems like the stores are getting ready for Easter already! This year it has fallen to us to plan and run a major Easter event. Any ideas for how to amuse a dozen pre-schoolers?

    Family finances

How do you manage the family money? If your wife/partner doesn't have a paid job do you allocate an allowance or does she have free rein on the bank account?

    Ice cream delights

I had a great weekend assisting my daughter as she created an original ice cream sundae at home. I gave her free rein to make whatever combination she liked, from a policed selection of items of course.

    Buying clothes

A few days ago it was time for a shopping trip as my daughter is fast outgrowing her wardrobe. Boy was it a surprise to see her taking an interest in what she wears. I can only imagine this is going to get harder as her opinions and tastes develop!

    Vacations without the kids

The other day I mentioned to my wife that it would be great if we could take a short vacation, just the two of us. Despite being interested in the idea she is convinced this isn't feasible until our daughter is older. Although she's only five my daughter is pretty independent and sometimes...
